Looking forward to a new decade
As we enter a new decade it’s the perfect time to predict graphic design trends in 2020 and beyond.
I’ve been reviewing lots of online articles on this subject. Predictions vary so I have summarised the most popular trends in the infographic below.
As with all fashions, trends come and go and as a designer who has been around for a few decades, I have seen some of these before, but it is the style in which they are applied that creates a new ‘on trend’ look.
Over the decades graphic design software has evolved beyond our designer dreams and it has often been new features and capabilities first developed by creative software such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign that have inspired designers and driven the trends. For example, masking photographic images to appear within custom shapes or lettering within your layout, creating animated gifs, publishing interactive PDFs, or just the application of drop shadows to lift elements off the page or screen.
Moving on from 2019, when colours were bold and bright, fonts were simple and light, animation became the big new ‘must have’, what is in your designer’s toolbox for 2020?
Pantone’s Colour of the Year 2020
Every year, the experts over at Pantone Color Institute choose a shade they feel will best reflect the year ahead. This is based on various things – from fashion design and interior trends to current affairs and world news. The chosen hue is intended to represent a snapshot of the world.
Design Trends in 2020
Designers and brands are predicted to step back from the vivid and bold colour trends of last year, moving towards more muted colour palettes.
The past few years in design have been dominated by bold colours, mind-bending gradients, and futuristic compositions. But in 2020, the graphic design world is going to feel a lot more reserved, harmonious, and natural.
Design styles that were very unique just a few years ago have become just another common tactic and the shifts are likely a reaction to the overuse of some of the previous graphic design trends.
However, infographics remain a very popular way to get your message across in an appealing, easy to read way, though the styling and colour palettes may change in accordance with the design trends in 2020.
So let’s look forward to the new decade, starting with our infographic below, 8 Graphic Design Trends for 2020 and beyond!
